AWP in Portland

Every year the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) holds a national conference and bookfair somewhere in the USA. Participating again, PLU's RWW joined this year's event down in Portland, Oregon. Normally acquiring at least 12,000 attendees, word quickly spread on the final day that this year boasted an astonishing 15,000+ at the Oregon Convention Center. Fortuitously, I was able to be counted in this number for my first AWP experience--the book-lover in me was (and is) thrilled! (And, as a true introvert, equally exhausted in the aftermath.)

Prominent faculty and accomplished graduates from RWW held panels and book signings, and RWW itself had an impressively stocked booth in the bookfair, lined with rows of literary gems on tables, accented with chocolates.

Now rebranded, new materials were designed to be phased in, set for a full refreshment this year. For AWP, this included a fresh new banner featuring our new logo.

This conference converged with an exciting 15th anniversary for the RWW program, so on Day 3 there was a celebration which served as a reunion of sorts for not only RWW, but Soundings as well--getting the chance to reunite with faces from our former issues was a treat.

In the end, I traveled back via Amtrak. Portland's Union Station offered both a vibrant welcome and sendoff.

Until next time ~
